Update on Book 3 / Apple Sales

Lifting my head up from all the typing, outlining, thinking, and general frustration of an early draft to give you all a quick update.

I can’t yet estimate a date on Girls Wearing Black 3. I take longer to crank out a manuscript than some indie authors for the simple reason that, for me, the longer I spend on it, the better it turns out. That may seem like a bit of a truism that isn’t even worth saying, but it makes me a bit of an outlier among indie authors. I know some writers can finish a book in a draft or two, but for me, that’s when I just start to feel like the story is taking shape. My process amounts to: Write a draft, cut most of it. Write another draft, cut most of it. Write another draft….and on and on until it’s all worth keeping.

All of this is to say…my promise at the end of Book 2 of an early 2013 release for Book 3 will probably still hold. It would be awesome to get it out early and be in time for the holiday season, but I don’t see it happening.

On a completely unrelated note, I want to say hello to everyone who bought the book in iTunes or iBooks from around the world. Last month, for the first time ever (and I’ve been selling eBooks since early 2010), my sales on Apple exceeded my sales on Amazon. For most of my career as an author, there was Amazon and there was everybody else who, combined, still didn’t equal the sales of Amazon. To have someone other than Amazon be my primary mode of sale is quite a change!

Wherever you found my books, I’m glad to have you. And a special hello to those of you from Australia. Almost a third of my October sales were from the land down under, which was also a first.

As always, thanks everyone for reading!

I’m Canadian and one of the happy purchasers of the first 2 books in this series and also The Demon Queen and the Locksmith from Amazon.

Thank you so much for making your books available on Amazon so people like me (who are always wishing that there were more original, intelligent and breathtaking fantasy stories like your creations) can find them. This series, and The Demon Queen and the Locksmith, are now on my list of favourite fantasy books of all time. I’m quite particular, so your work is in good company.

I’m usually very disappointed with stories and films about vampires and have wished that someone would do something compelling and worthwhile with them. Now, thankfully, they (you) have with the Girls Wearing Black series.

One thing that I notice in your work is that you seem to understand genius very well, both the light and dark of it. Stunningly well really.

So, I’m really looking forward to reading #3 . If it takes you much longer than projected to make #3 something that you’re fully satisfied with, so be it, I’ll be patient, it clearly is worth the wait. 🙂

    Best regards, and thanks again,
    Lillea

Thanks Lillea! I’m thrilled with your comments and appreciate you coming here to share them.

Genius is a topic that fascinates me. I grew up in a family of scientists and had one uncle in particular who was on the cutting edge of his field for his entire life. I think characters like Jill Wentworth and Peter Gerrard land in my stories because they make the world so much more interesting!

    Have a great week!

You’re welcome! I should have checked your site sooner to see if my comment was posted and you perhaps replied, so sorry for the delay in my reply to your reply!

That’s very interesting about your family. Genius is a topic that fascinates me too. I know a few brilliant scientists myself, all deeply humanitarian as well so their powers are used for good, thankfully, so it’s great to find a realistic and intriguing depiction of that kind of intelligence in your books. I think that most writers can’t capture it well (it becomes cartoonish) because they don’t really understand it at all, but you definitely do.

I hope you have a great week too.

Just finish #2 after consuming #1 in a day. Very pulling story. May I ask how many books you intent to have in the series?

  • Spencer Baum January 3, 2013, 9:13 am

    Hi Lyzz,

Thanks for the comment. I’m so glad the books are engaging for you!

As I work through Book 3, I’m seeing the whole series as being a minimum of 5 books and a maximum of 7.

I absolutely LOVE the Girls wearing black books!!!! U are an amazing author with a brilliant mind and I can’t wait to read book 3 & many others to come! When i was young, i hated reading & I didn’t start enjoying it until I was in my late 20’s. I just never gave reading a chance until twilight came out & a friend recommended I try it. I fell in love immediately and have been going strong ever since. I THOUGHT Stephanie Meyers had a brilliant mind until I read your GWB books, & now I can honestly say you put her to shame! You make her world of sparkly vampires look like child’s play : ) I have read the works of several other authors that I love, Sherrilyn Kenyon being one of them, & u top them all. Book 1 had me from the start & book 2 left me wanting more…i can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve next!!!

What gave you the idea to write the Girls wearing Black what was the insparation behind it?

  • Spencer Baum February 17, 2013, 6:10 pm

    Hi Sophie,

Great question! Too good of a question to answer here in the comments. I’ll write a post about it.

  • Spencer Baum February 17, 2013, 10:06 pm

New post is up about the inspiration to write Girls Wearing Black, which began as an attempted short story about a vampire coming to dinner, and grew from there.
